There are two waymarked trails through the reserve one is a mile-long bluebell walk which is very popular in the springtime. This 79 hectare nature reserve actually straddles the Hertfordshire/Bedfordshire border but Im claiming it in our list of best walks in Hertfordshire for families because it is so lovely, especially in the summer months. Mangrove Green2.25 milesThe first walk is a very simple short stroll in the Hertfordshire countryside surrounding the small village of Mangrove Green. - from the Three Rivers District Council website, Rye Meads Nature Reserve - (RSPB) - "This delightful wetland reserve beside the River Lee is a firm favourite with walkers, birdwatchers and photographers thanks to its many trails and hides. " There is a steep climb when you walk past the Church, but that will burn off some calories for those of you that want to visit the pub on the High Street towards the end of the walk. Wherever you go, make sure to visit the Magical Wood complete with wood carvings of the woodland animals and a picnic area. You then climb steadily up to the top of Telegraph Hill where you'll enjoy some lovely views before heading back towards Lilley along the top of Lilley Hoo. Difficulty: Easy. The first of our routes is a very short stroll into the Beeches and around the golf course area of the woodlands. There is a lovely storyboard telling the story of Heartwood Forest which you should try to read before you start out on your walk if you can. You'll then loop around and head back to the start of the walk along the Chain Walk. The extra distance however, takes you on a long walk along the Back Lane Roman track and then loops around on the Chain walk route back towards Cottered. It is also good for push chairs. As it was still pretty wet we decided a wander around Berkhamsted would be a safe bet if we needed to escape the rain. Its also perfect for cycling as the pathways are fairly flat. There are not a lot of surprises on this one as you will be mainly strolling around open arable farmland footpaths, but you will enjoy a dose of fresh air, peace, quiet and a lovely village pub towards the end of the route. This, coupled with the fact that it starts and ends at a wonderful and quintessentially English country village pub, makes it one of our favourite walks in Hertfordshire. In essence it's an extension of the third walk that heads north out of the village through peaceful Hertfordshire countryside and along the John Bunyan Trail until it meets the Icknield Way Trail. We have a range of walks to suit all abilities and backgrounds. Parking - 10 per car. Theres a few elements hinting to Gobions history as an 18th century pleasure garden including a folly arch and huge ornamental cedar trees. Alban Way - "The Alban Way is a trail for cyclists and walkers along a disused section of the Great Northern Railway, between the historic towns of St Albans and Hatfield, providing an interesting route through Hertfordshire countryside." Oughtonhead is a beautiful nature reserve with the River Oughton running through it and is managed by the Herts Wildlife Trust. "Hardwick Park in County Durham is a Visit England accredited attraction and perfect for a stroll at any time of the year. It should be fairly easy to plot using the Ordnance survey website or equivalent map. There is a lovely woodland area but the big draw for the kids is watching the canal boats pass by. It offers an excellent ride from the heart of Tonbridge alongside the River Medway, out into the countryside to the glorious buildings of Penshurst Place. The walk doesn't visit the village of Green End, but instead descends through Graves Wood to take you on a walk along The Old Bourne track and a long the valley. You'll also enjoy lots of fresh air on this one, and the hills on the route will also offer some nice views and work up a bigger appetite for your visit to the village pub towards the end of the route. There are lots of pathways through the woods and a brilliant shallow stream which little ones love playing in. Refreshments: The Boot, Kimpton The Bright Star, Peter's Green, Kimpton9.5 milesThis final route option is basically a grand and epic adventure in the Hertfordshire countryside around the village of Kimpton. This version enjoys everything from the other walks, but also heads further south to walk around another of the Willow Lakes and also passes the entrance to the Willows Activity Farm. The walk starts in Hartham Common and follows the River Lea (or Lee). There is a fair climb as you head out into the countryside, so this is a more strenuous walk. The 8.6 km walk includes Woldingham School, Godstone Vineyards, sections of the North Downs Way trail and the Great Church Wood nature reserve. Danemead Wood1 mileThis first route option is a lovely short family-friendly woodland stroll around the pretty Danemead Wood, part of the majestic Broxbourne Woods nature reserve in Hertfordshire. Refreshments: The Crooked Billet, Colney Heath, Colney Heath2.5 milesIf you have a bit more time, then this second route option might be a better option. Sawtrees Woods4.25 milesThis second longer route is a lovely varied adventure in the Hertfordshire countryside surrounding Sawtrees Woods. The rest of the walk is mainly made up of sweeping undulating open countryside, so it's really a walk for those of you that really want to stretch your legs. It enjoys a lot of the main areas, villages and features that you'll find in the previous routes, but all in one long circular walk. We havent been after dark but apparently you can see the eerie glow of glow worms which must be quite a sight! You can expect lovely views, lots of fresh air and exercise, some nice pubs in the villages of Flamstead and Markyate and a walk through the pretty grounds of Beechwood Park school. Wimpole has a huge country pile surrounded by miles of woods, fields and parkland. Jockey End2.75 milesThe second route is basically a short extension to the first route for those of you with a little bit more time. There is a main (free) car park close to the visitor centre at Ashridge Estate and in good weather you can park along the entrance road that leads to the visitor centre. The local land owner has also created a walk through the Lammas which is signposted. Blackleach . This is a very short family-friendly pub walk around the pretty village of Barley, Hertfordshire. Disused railway lines are perfect for family walks in Hertfordshire because they are usually very flat, even surfaces and easy to navigate. However, after that the walk gets more fun with a deep excursion into the Broxbourne Woods and then a nice undulating countryside walk back to Goffs Oak along the Hertfordshire Way. It heads out west from Lilley, climbing Wardswood Lane and then the John Bunyan Trail before joining the Chiltern way to loop back to the start via Whitehill Farm and Lilleypark Wood. This would be about 6 miles in total. There are also walking loops off the Nickey Line that take you to Rothampsted Park and Rothampsted Estate if you prefer more of a circular walk. You'll first climb up the big hill out of the village towards the golf course and then you'll loop back down though more lovely open countryside towards Dane End. Best Family-Friendly Walks Within One Hour's Drive Of London There are many trails through the woodland making it a great place to just wander and explore. The 1 km trail starts and finishes at the car park and takes you on a loop passing 9 sculptures by local artist, Daniel Cordell. Refreshments: The Fox & Duck, Therfield Then at the bottom of the hill you'll wander through the pretty woodlands of Therfield Heath, before then starting the long and picturesque climb back up the hill towards the village. The village is also pleasant to walk through theres a path running alongside the river through a field known locally as the Lammas theres a small parking area on Mill Lane.
